fear and longing in brooklyn

i started knitting a blanket
but couldn't find the right sized needles
and i fear the blanket will be too small

i watched too many shows about serial killers
and now i can't fall asleep at night
because i see in the darkness
what isn't there

you rested your paw on my foot comforting me
with gentle kisses on my ankle
hoping i might forget my worry

he's been gone too long
and we both miss him
eagerly awaiting his return
so our emotional worlds can be back in order
and you can lick his ears

Flying with John Denver

Soaring miles above me
A jet on its way to the Other.
The engine barks like a guard dog.
But the food tastes
surprisingly good.
And your passport
sits lightly in your pocket.
Welcome to the friendly skies.

All those early Monday mornings
Shared newspapers
on the 1 train.
Half-finished sodokus
beside horoscope half-truths.
You held my ink-stained hands.

We are hydrogen and oxygen.
We are love and rainbow cookies.
We are cloud trails
but we never knew it.

My heart is a John Denver.
Tell me that you’ll wait for me.

This is what I mean by intimacy:

Imagine we are old friends.  We run into each other on the subway. We make our way toward one another through the car. As you go in for a handshake, I grip my right pant leg just below the knee and pull it up, exposing my ankle. I am wearing hot pink socks with black and white skunks on them. I lean in close and whisper into your ear, "I bought these socks at the Sock Man on St. Marks for $6."  We both blush. When it's working properly, the slide show feels something like this.

Caterpiller

She hungers
her way along

Crawls on smooth edges
jagged corners

Unlocks the mystery
of her traumatic transformation

Dancing
in her chrysalis

As she dreams
of flight

THE INDIGNITIES OF DISCOVERY

Just like you I only have this
subtle smell
of the world right now –
and just like you I grow most golden
watching strangers be themselves
(the mothers who pull their children
to their chests, chaotic corners
in the hottest afternoons).
But I am not trapped.
So what to do with this misty gift?
I say my brain is bad but maybe that
is that just a flirting form,
old impulse to mess-announce
from the platform
of all love, assumed.

Builder Broken

Pulling a shadow from the sheet
Don't let me be
       a note sliding upscale
Smooth on that skin tone
Cheers the spoons
            the roving bachata
            a knuckle tattoo
Wandering towards a radiator
the steam draws us in
You've got to live a little
                                         bigger

Line

Bedded in one end of the spectrum, knowing it really is an end,
and knowing that this really is the worst example of this kind of experience
and that persistence may step on but that's the accident of design.
Persistence in sport is great, not so great otherwise.
You go in not knowing the outcome, and as as the power of exposure subdues and awes,
and your thoughts quieten and defiance sets in place,
you know only that defiance can kill you and as such
must be an end unto itself.

Defiance is not a snot on my daily sensibility, I should have messed with teacher more,
understood it then when it was safe to do so.

You've got to go about reheating slowly though, and mind you're not defying chilblains.
